Going Solo

The Galerie L’Envol is presenting their first solo exhibition – a collection of paintings by Grégoire Ferland titled Cathédrale.

LEnvol-GFerand

This is a big improvement over the eclectic collection of artworks normally on display at L’Envol. Ferland’s large canvases work very well in this space and completely change the gallery’s presence. As the title of the show suggests, Ferland’s works are based on the aesthetics of stained glass windows often found in cathedrals. Thick, black lines divide the canvas, the resulting geometric shapes are coloured in reds, ambers, and beige. Stylistically this work is a bit of a throw-back to the 1950s and is stricktly an exploration of form. My favourite is the mildly comical Croix marche, which reminds me a bit of Pellan’s work.
