A Fable of Gluttony

For those of you who enjoy dark humour, I recommend that you check out the exhibition All you can eat by Karine Giboulo at Galerie sas.

You’ll be immediately captivated by Giboulo’s hilarious, yet slightly macabre scenarios. The artist’s work is a socio-economic comment on the Western consumer society, especially on our tendency to over-indulge on everything from entertainment to food while we casually devour our environment in the process. Giboulo is polemic without being preachy, because she successfully makes use of both humour and the device of the fable. Giant gophers live in their underground lairs, playing video games, lazing about, and littering the world with their trash. A cigar-smoking polar bear pushes a shopping cart overflowing with Millionaire brand canned fish. Tiny, angel-winged piglets and born in well tended cabbage patches in a factory that will eventually turn them into barbeque pork. Giboulo’s models are stunning: brightly coloured, incredibly detailed, complete with flashing lights, they are a labour of love. But make sure you take the time to enjoy her equally poignant drawings and prints.
