The Art of Engagement

You have until the end of the week to check out Kate Hutchinson‘s exhibit of photographs titled Why Am I Marrying Him? at the Visual Voice Art Gallery.

VVG-KHutchinson

On display are a series of portraits of Hutchinson’s husband-to-be, captured in various moments of his life: hanging out on the sofa playing video games, in his dad’s wood workshop waiting for instructions, leaning on his bicycle taking in the view. By creating this series of images the artist attempts to document as many aspects of her fiancé’s personality as possible, and the resulting photographs transmit a sense of character that goes beyond traditional portraiture. This body of work is both a love letter as well as a sincere exploration of the tradition of the engagement period, a time when you decide whether or not to spend the rest of you life with this one person. For what it’s worth, I think it’s an excellent idea for an artist to marry her muse.
